Bile ducts are tiny tubes which carry bile. The bile function is just to break fats present in food for digestion. Bile is build by liver and is stored in gall bladder. It works as a bridge between gall bladder and liver to the tiny bowel. If gall bladder is being removed, then bile flows from liver to the small intestine. Gall bladder and bile ducts are known by different name, which is biliary system. Bile ducts cancer is a common form of cancer which is known as adenocarcinoma, which begins in bile duct lining. Cancers can grow in any area of bile ducts, as per their location they are divided into three different groups. Bilirubin and bile even cause itching. Jaundice is due to the bile ducts blockage or to hepatitis. It is essential to understand the most of its blockage causes are not by cancer. Not even one cause is been demonstrated. Gall bladder is a pear shaped, tiny organ at the right part of abdomen, just under the liver. The main function of bile duct is to stock bile, a yellow green color and a bitter fluid which is produced in liver cells. Bile is important for the fats digestion and is the best way by which your whole body removes drugs, waste products and cholesterol of metabolism.

Symptoms

If cancer grows in bile ducts then it can block bile flow from liver to intestine. This causes flow of bile back to the body and blood tissues and changes the color of white part of the eyes into yellow. As cancer develops and spreads, the pain mostly develops in the top part of abdomen and can even spreads to back. The pain can get worse after you lie down or eat. Pancreas cancer can even cause nausea, loss in weight, weakness and appetite loss. Tumors can avoid the food passage by blocking pancreatic enzymes flow. Bloating decreased appetite, nausea, weight loss, fever or enlarging the abdominal mass are some symptoms, which can be attributable to the cancer in bile duct. Early cancers mainly don’t cause any pain. The main sings from intra hepatic cancers are fatigue and weight loss. As cancer spreads the pain can grow in the stomach region.

Treatment

Treatments of cancer in bile duct differ with the tumor size and how actually it has being advanced. Among the different treatments available, some are surgery, chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, biliary drainage, liver transplantation and radiation therapy. With these treatment cancer will not be fully removed, but will not spread in the outer part of the liver, thus liver transplantation can be a best option. There are several institutions present that offer transplantation for cancer in bile ducts. Complete tumor removal is the potential and effective curative treatment for the cancers in the lower bile ducts. The treatment mainly needs a Whipple operation. Distal cancer is much more amenable for removing completely than to the pancreatic cancer. 5 yr survival rate of 40 percent are being found after the full removal of the distal cancer.
